Childhood Background

I was born on Sado island. I was an only child. My father made bamboo ware. My mother was a seamstress. I lived there until I graduated from high school. My experience there became the foundation of my ideas. I liked newspapers from early primary school. I tended to ponder things by myself.

When I was in first grade, we bought a television set. I watched Hitachi commercials that featured an enormous tree. The tree really got me thinking about how big its roots must have been. So, as a child I was more interested in things that one cannot see. I wondered about how things started and about nature.

When in junior and senior high school, I was led a small group of children who did not study so much and took up part-time work in natural areas like the beach or mountains. The climate there was tough in the winter season. And we had little infrastructure like transportation and were poor. I think that such experiences created patience and perseverance. My parents loved me deeply. But I also realized that we were very badly off. Our most luxurious feast Sukiyaki with vegetables and a few pieces of pork. I wanted to escape such a life. So I left for Tokyo when 18. I was able to pull myself through by thinking positively, imagining my future success and while realizing that things would not be easy because I had nothing.
